 Purpose

The Music Director position is part-time, an average of 15 hours per week with more hours depending on demand and position growth. The musical component of Trinity’s order of service is in support of Trinity’s ministry leaders, programs, and staff to achieve the church’s vision and goals.  This preparation sets the stage for the Presence of Our Lord to be welcomed and honored each time we are gathered together. The Music Director is responsible for the coordinating and leading the Thursday evening rehearsals, Sunday worship services and occasional special services. The position is expected to grow to include developing and overseeing congregational instrumental and vocal talent, choir, and bell choir.

 Responsibilities

·         Choose songs for services in coordination with the Pastor(s) per the most current Book of Order, Worship (Elder(s), and history of songs sung weekly.

·         Articulate and drive the role of music in worship.

·         Provide music for each service and ensure Trinity’s compliance with music copyright law and common practice.

·         Schedule and supervise instrumentalists and vocalists for each service, to include weekly music teams, occasional choir and bell choir offerings, etc.

·         Schedule rehearsals with instrumentalists and vocalists, to include Sunday and mid-week.

·         Coordinate with Children’s and Youth Ministry Teams to provide music opportunities.

·         Coordinate with “Music Librarian” or in the absence of a volunteer, take on the role.

·         Coordinate with the worship technicians (sound, media, etc.).

·         Identify and develop congregational instrumental and vocal talent.

·         Maintain Trinity owned instruments and/or coordinate the maintenance needs such as regular tuning of the pianos and sound equipment.

·         Coordinate with the Worship Elder(s) on budget and spending for services.

·         Introduce new music as appropriate.

·         Coordinate with the Worship Elder(s) / Session on musical outreach opportunities and groups using Trinity for rehearsals and/or storage.

·         Coordinate and assist with special musical events.

·         Provide material for congregational communications as needed.

 Qualifications

·         Committed to Jesus Christ as Savior and to His Church.

·         Experience leading or directing a choir, worship services, bell choir, or other music leadership roles within a church or performance environment highly preferred.

·         Gracious, flexible, and willing attitude.

·         Always striving for excellence.

 ·         Participation in weekly worship at Trinity Presbyterian Church (Trinity) is required.

·         Personal calling to worship leadership and outreach through music.

·         Can read and direct music and explain basic music theory.

·         Experience as an instrumentalist or vocalist or both in a performance environment; experience with piano preferred.

·         Experience leading teams and implementing strategy.

·         Familiarity with both traditional and contemporary Christian music / hymns.

·         Familiar with music copyright laws and common practices.

·         Strong interpersonal skills.

·         Strong organizational and administrative skills, including written communication.

·         Ability to transpose music preferred.

·         Expertise with at least one software package for managing presentation of song lyrics preferred.

 Employment and Accountability

Terms of employment are in keeping with Trinity’s current Personnel Policies. The Music Director is accountable to the Trinity Session through the Pastor(s) as Head of Staff and the worship Elder(s).  Unless otherwise announced, the employee’s service is reviewed yearly by the Pastor(s) and Worship Elder(s).  The Music Director meets and/or corresponds regularly with the Pastor(s) and Worship Elder(s).  The Pastor(s) is/are the overall Worship Director in any given service.  The Music Director will receive an initial evaluation following the first 90 days in this position, in accordance with the Trinity Handbook of Personnel Policies and Procedures. The Music Director will give notice of any absences to the Pastor(s) and Worship Elder(s) at the earliest opportunity.
